Aqua-Spark is a Dutch global sustainable aquaculture investment fund based in Utrecht, Netherlands, investing in small and medium-sized companies building environmentally and socially sustainable aquaculture and aquatic-food-systems businesses. The firm was founded in 2013 by Co-Founders Amy Novogratz (formerly TED Prize Director) and Mike Velings (Dutch entrepreneur and investor) as one of the world's first dedicated open-ended evergreen global-aquaculture investment funds, with the thesis of backing sustainable, scalable aquaculture operations (including fish farming, algae cultivation, feed innovation, aquatic-biotechnology, and supply-chain technology) as a response to global food-security challenges from overfishing and growing protein demand. Aqua-Spark is structured as an evergreen fund (rather than a traditional closed-end limited-partnership) with ongoing open fundraising, and has raised capital from more than 300 investors globally with aggregate capital deployed exceeding USD 250 million+ across 30+ portfolio companies. Notable portfolio companies include Calysta (single-cell protein), Protix (insect-protein animal feed, Dutch unicorn-adjacent), Matorka (Icelandic land-based salmon), Siao Ling Foods, XpertSea, eFishery (Indonesian aquaculture-tech unicorn), Lumen Bioscience, and many other sustainable-aquaculture companies.
