Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP)

Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP), a University of Massachusetts initiative formed in 1994, turns research into innovative technologies and moves them from laboratories to businesses ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations. The activities of CVIP include, but are not limited to, licensing University technologies, developing industry partnerships between University faculty and companies, participating in new company formation based on University technologies, supporting the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center and advising entrepreneurial and IP-related activities. CVIP-generated revenues are reinvested into the university's growing research enterprise. In conjunction with Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property, Commercial Venture Development (CVD) invests in entrepreneurs with the goal of launching and participating in successful ventures. Established in 1998, CVD portfolio companies have raised nearly $80 million from some of the largest and most respected venture capital firms in the country. CVD operates a business incubator, providing facilities and support to compelling early-stage companies.
